A Banner Week

This week beautifully displays the kind of everyday “ministry” and creative outreaches I am doing in this season of ministry. It’s a kind of impact that doesn’t show up in church growth metrics, but it is “lifestyle evangelism” trying to be a salt and light pastor leading a salt and light church at MainStreet. Here’s a day-by-day overview:

Diverse group discussing books together in a cozy library

Sunday: Kicked Off Fall Series

MainStreet folks gathered for a meal and piled into the living room as we kicked off a very timely and practical video series called “Control Freak.” A great and honest conversation ensued. Join us Sundays at 5!

Monday: Time Capsule Concert

I performed my first concert of all original songs (plus some Dolly Parton mixed in) in Eden Prairie. These are songs 25 years in the making, based on poems and love notes from my journal from college and my early 20s. New Time Capsule album in the works!

Wednesday & Thursday: Hosting Soccer & CC Team Parties

My wife is the hostess with the mostest, and offered to host and feed Isaak’s soccer team hotdogs on Wednesday and Peter’s cross country team pasta on Thursday this week! That’s about 100 hungry athletes. Oof-dah. That’s salt and light, and ketchup and mustard.

Thursday: Diamond Cat Show

I’ll be performing my Diamond Cat concert again at a new place in St. Louis Park called TowerLight. I really enjoy doing this show, and I finally finished Cat Stevens’ memoir recently. Good read, gentle spirit and opened my eyes to the anti-Islam sentiment that rocked our nation post-September 11, 2001.

Friday: Jason’s House Youth Outreach

We’re hosting our first monthly youth ministry outreach of the fall at our home. We send the kids into the school with invites and then tell all the middle schoolers and high schoolers who show up about the Way of Jesus and his Kingdom of radical love.

Saturday: Youth Disc Golf Discipleship

Me and the kids designed an 18-hole disc golf course this August at our home. Saturday we’re hosting a “DISCipleship Golf” event. We’ll play a round and discuss my new disc-themed Bible study lessons. These are a spin-off of my “God & Golf” booklet I wrote years ago as a youth pastor.

Sunday: Dramatic Performance at Brookdale

I will get into character and take the stage to dramatize my original short story, The Lucky Tale of Eutychus at Brookdale Covenant this Sunday. I haven’t performed a dramatic monologue in a long time! Break a leg.

That’s a full week. My ministry cup runneth over. Come be part of the fun!

I am able to pursue this unconventional style of missional pastoring because of the support of generous donors and the faithful giving of MainStreet Covenant Church folks. Grace and peace!
