Clark Pinnock, a well-known theologian, has passed. As a young college kid majoring in Theology at Bethel, I attended the Evangelical Theological Society annual meeting in Colorado Springs in 2001. My friend Joe and I had the opportunity to tag along with a group of scholars going out for dinner one evening. We carpooled from the hotel to the restaurant and, as luck would have it, Dr. Pinnock asked us if he could ride in our rental van to the restaurant.
As a 20 year old aspiring theologian Pinnock was larger than life and we felt like the paparrazzi as we sat at the Applebee’s table listening to Pinnock, Greg Boyd, John Sanders and others discuss their controversial “open views” of God’s sovereignty and foreknowledge. A memorable evening for sure.
I enjoyed some of Pinnock’s writings, especially The Flame of Love, and am sad at his passing. I disagree with some of his theological conclusions, but I admire his humility and courage to wrestle with the text, question tradition, and change his views over the course of his life. The following quote is classic Pinnock:
“I do not apologize for admitting to being on a pilgrimage in theology, as if it were in itself some kind of weakness of intelligence or character. Feeling our way toward the truth is the nature of theological work even with the help of Scripture, tradition and community …. A pilgrimage, therefore, far from being unusual or slightly dishonorable, is what we would expect theologians who are properly aware of their limitations to experience.”
