For the past 20 years I have been teaching, preaching, and publishing articles on Christian faith, following Jesus, Bible devotionals, sermons, theological reflections, social and political commentary, and more. I am proud of this significant output which includes more than 2,000 published articles filling some 40 volumes on my shelf.

My great desire is to find more ways to share spiritual wisdom with more people, to help cultivate a deeper, more Jesus-shaped faith in others. But here’s the honest truth about a significant cultural trend: long form reading is dying a slow but certain death—especially among younger generations. Short Tweets killed blogs years ago, though some of us have kept writing anyways. 

We now live in a screen-based, visual society where most people consume information and news and entertainment in catchy memes, click bait headlines, and short TikTok videos. Seasoned preachers and tenured professors are finding that, with the decrease in the average person’s attention span, 45 minute sermons and 75 minute lectures are less and less effective in getting their message across. 

So, what’s a writer, teacher or preacher to do when faced with this cultural preference for shorter form, visually stimulating communication? What if there was a way to give some of my favorite articles and most impactful sermons a second life and reach a wider audience? Is there a way to repackage meaty old sermons that are full of life-changing truths but were, admittedly, too long and meandering the first time around? 

I am thrilled to introduce my latest project: short, stimulating visual summaries of some of my most thought-provoking articles, sermons, essays, and teachings over the years. These videos will look similar to the popular explainer videos produced by The Bible Project. Beautifully animated. Full of color and concise commentary. The narrators break down some large, complex topics I’ve written on and bring forth my main points in just 5-7 minutes, always getting very personal and practical by the end. 

Tired of 45 minute sermons? Too busy to read a long, rambling essay? These videos will get some of my most uplifting and hope filled messages into the eyes and ears of a whole new audience. This is one more way I am living into my calling, and the vision of MainStreet Covenant Church, to bring the faith, hope and love of Jesus beyond the church walls to as many people as possible. 

I hope these videos will stimulate your own faith and that you will share them with others. They could be used for personal devotions or to stimulate small group discussions.
