I’m reading the great biography of Bonhoeffer by Eric Metaxas. It’s very long and filled with wonderful quotes from Bonhoffer’s writings and letters. But the following quote rises above them all, one that so resonates with my own passion and convictions that I told Keri last night, “This would be a quote I would like to have read at my funeral someday, with the hope that I could somehow have come close to being the kind of man he describes.” Dietrich is a man after my own heart. Love him.
“Who stands fast? Only the man whose final standard is not his reason, his principles, his conscience, his freedom, or his virtue, but who is ready to sacrifice all this when he is called to obedient and responsible action in faith and in exclusive allegiance to God — the responsible man, who tries to make his whole life an answer to the question and call of God.”
-Dietrich Bonhoeffer
