Spring Break ’22: Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Back in the mini-van of dreams for another spring break road trip. A few highlights so far include:

  • Visited the Hoosier Gym in Indiana where the classic 1985 film “Hoosiers” was filmed. A neat tour by charming old volunteers — like 92 years old! Then they let you shoot around and burn some energy.
  • In North Carolina we visited “Mayberry,” which is Andy Griffith’s hometown and not where the show was filmed. But this was a necessary pilgrimage due to the high stature Andy has on both sides of our family thanks to both the kids’ grandpas!
  • Drove 2 hours south to historic Charleston to visit Fort Sumter where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Took a ferry out to the man-made island fortress and learned a lot including the fact that some of those old cannons could fire a 1000 pound ball up to 8 miles!!
  • A sobering stop at the Hampton plantation to see the 18th C house and the “George Washington Oak”, a tree saved by Washington when he visited in 1791. An original bell still hangs in the tree that was used to control the enslaved people there. Our kids give that part of our history a big thumbs down (see photo).
  • Most of the days are being spent by the many pools at the resort on the beach. And while the temps have been unseasonably cool (woke up to 39 degrees today), kids have still been trying some skim boarding in the ocean. Abby and I collected shells last night and I ended today with a solo sunset walk on the beach, while Keri buried herself under blankets by the outdoor pool watching the kiddos and dreaming of warmer weather.

So blessed to get away and make some family memories together, even if many of those memories are enduring all the fights and tantrums in the mini-van of dreams. A couple more days on the beach before we begin our trip home. Enjoy some pics.
