Himalayas & Lily Pads: On Fundamentalism

A big thought for a Monday…

Fundamentalists tend to be 100% certain they are right and others are wrong while only having considered 1% of the data (for they won’t consider divergent views). They label “dangerous heretics” all other theological pilgrims who humbly admit they don’t know it all and want to continue learning and discovering.

Fundamentalists passionately defend their narrow grasp of 1% of reality, while more adventurous learners scratch their heads and wonder why they don’t want to explore the other 99% together. We’re climbing the Himalayas; they’re protecting their lily pad with a pitch fork.

And it’s a pretty small god and a weak faith that is threatened by every new idea and fresh perspective, isn’t it?

I suppose there is some truth in the cliche that “If you’re too open-minded your brain might fall out.” But it’s equally true that “If you’re too closed-minded, most of God’s truth will never get in.”

That’s my big thought for a Monday. What are your thoughts?

  1. One of the pastors I’ve known whom I have highly respected often said, “Keep the windows open, but keep your screens on.” 1% of the information is definitely indicative of closed windows. No fresh air coming in.
